A new PS5 system software beta update has rolled out today, bringing a slew of upgrades to those lucky enough to be enrolled in Sony's [beta sign-up](https://www.playstation.com/en-gb/ps5/ps5-beta-program-sign-up/). Without further ado, here are the most significant updates:

**Discord Voice Chat**

The most significant addition is an extension to the Discord x PlayStation 5 integration announced as far back as May 2021. The new update will allow players to join Discord voice chats from a [PS5 console](https://stock-checker.com/products/playstation-5.html) and easily chat with friends on other gaming platforms. To enable this feature, players will first have to link their accounts following these simple steps:

Once your PS5 has installed beta software, grab your controller and head into **Settings > Users and Accounts > Linked Services.** Here, you'll find a new option to link your Discord account.

Select that, and you'll start linking your PlayStation Network account to your Discord account.

**Note:** If you have already linked your PlayStation and Discord accounts before this update, you will need to repeat these steps to enable the necessary permissions to activate voice chat.

Once this is complete, PS5 beta users can enable Discord voice chat straight from their PS5 or using the PlayStation app, as long as their app is updated to the latest version.

This update has been long awaited since the initial announcement in May 2021. PlayStation initially started its integration with Discord by allowing players to showcase which games they were playing right from their Discord status. That update was met with backlash as many players assumed voice chat integration would be on the way much sooner. Almost two years later, Sony is finally delivering on their promises to have a smooth, seamless integration between the PlayStation 5 and Discord client.

**Variable Refresh Rate support for 1440p**

Another long-awaited feature rolled into this update is support for variable refresh rate (VRR) for 1440p displays compatible with HDMI 2.1. VRR allows the display's refresh rate to change dynamically in response to the content's frame rate. This results in smoother, more fluid gameplay and eliminates screen tearing and stuttering. It's worth noting that VRR support is only available for a select number of games at this time, including:

- Astro's Playroom
- Back 4 Blood
- Call of Duty: Vanguard
- Call of Duty: Black Ops – Cold War
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II
- Deathloop
- Destiny 2
- Devil May Cry 5 – Special Edition
- Dying Light 2
- DiRT 5
- Godfall
- Ghostwire: Tokyo
- Hogwarts Legacy
- Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
- Resident Evil Village
- Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales
- Marvel's Spider-Man: Remastered
- The Last of Us Part 1
- Tiny Tina's Wonderlands
- Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege
- Tribes of Midgard
- Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection

Sony has also updated the PS5 console's 1440p output test parameters, enabling 1440p support for a broader range of HDMI displays. Players can check if their HDMI device is compatible by switching on their PS5 and navigating to **[Settings] > [Screen and Video] > [Video Output] > [Test 1440p Output].**

**Other Features**

Those are the two most significant features. However, the newest update has added many quality-of-life features that will be welcome to many PlayStation players. Some highlights include:

**Start or Request a Share Screen from Your Friend's Profile:** Players can now send a Share Screen request or start sharing their screen with a friend directly from their profile. This can be done by selecting the Share Screen icon on a friend's profile to create a new session.

**New "Join Game" Icon in Party Chats:** On the voice chat card, a joinable icon will be displayed for party members playing a game you can join. Players can join the game directly by selecting the player and then choosing [Join Game] from the menu.

**Manually Upload Game Captures to PlayStation App:** Players can now manually select and upload individual screenshots or game clips to PS App from the PS5 console, then easily share them on social media or with friends.

The last feature worth mentioning is only available for players from the US or UK, which is game capture using voice commands. Players can say, "Hey, PlayStation, capture that!" to save a video clip of recent gameplay. The default duration saved is based on your settings. A specific period of gameplay between 15 seconds and 60 minutes can also be recorded by saying, "Hey, PlayStation, capture the last 5 minutes", for example. Finally, players can use their voice to stop and start a recording by saying, "Hey PlayStation, start recording," to create a new gameplay recording manually. You can then say, "Hey, PlayStation, stop recording", to end the recording and save the video clip.

**Conclusion**

Sony is finally delivering on some long-awaited features for the PlayStation 5. However, as it stands, these features are currently only being rolled out to beta participants. It is still being determined when the general public will gain access. Still, based on previous updates, it usually takes around 4-6 weeks.
