The iconic Atari 800XL home computer is back with THE 800XL, a modern recreation of the classic 8-bit machine featuring HDMI output, a working cartridge slot, and support for original Atari software. The system includes 25 built-in games, a USB joystick, and the ability to load additional games and software from a USB flash drive.

Pre-orders are now live in the UK, US, and Europe, with prices set at £199.99, $219.99, and €219.99, respectively.

A Classic Atari Computer Reborn

Originally part of Atari's hugely popular 8-bit computer family, the Atari 800XL introduced a generation of users to home computing, gaming and programming. THE 800XL aims to recreate that experience while adding modern conveniences that make it easier to enjoy classic software on today's displays.

One of its biggest features is a working cartridge slot compatible with most original Atari 8-bit cartridges. This means collectors who still own physical Atari games can use their cartridges with the new machine.

The 800XL also supports Atari 8-bit home computer software alongside games developed for the Atari 5200 console, giving access to a substantial library of classic titles.

With HDMI connectivity, the computer connects to modern TVs and monitors. USB flash drive support also lets you load games and software.

25 Classic Games Built In

THE 800XL comes preloaded with 25 games, offering a mixture of arcade favourites and memorable home computer releases.

Highlights include Centipede, Missile Command, Asteroids, Boulder Dash, M.U.L.E., Crystal Castles, Miner 2049er and The Seven Cities of Gold.

The complete list of included games is:

• Airball

What's Included in the Box?

Alongside the THE 800XL computer, buyers will receive the THECXSTICK 8-button USB joystick, which features a USB-A connection and a 1.8-metre (6-foot) cable.

The package also includes an HDMI cable, a USB-A to USB-C power cable and a quick-start guide. Both supplied cables measure 1.8 metres (6 feet).

An AC power adapter is not included, so buyers will need to provide a suitable adapter separately.

Pre-orders are currently available across the UK, US and Europe at the following prices:

Bringing Atari's 8-Bit Legacy to a New Generation

THE 800XL offers an interesting combination of nostalgia and practicality. Rather than simply offering a collection of pre-installed games, it also lets owners revisit their existing Atari software libraries through its cartridge slot and USB loading.

For anyone who grew up with Atari's 8-bit computers, the recreation offers a way to experience familiar games on modern hardware. It could also introduce a new generation to a computer that played an important role in the early days of home gaming.

With 25 games, HDMI connectivity, and compatibility with much of the original Atari 8-bit software library, THE 800XL looks set to be an appealing addition to the growing range of recreated retro computers when it arrives in 2027.
